Another thing that was added, is the Screenshot option. This option can be found in the shutdown menu. (long press the “Turn off” button to get there) So now we don’t need a special app to take screenshots!
Sony Ericsson also expanded their “Facebook inside Xperia” experience. You can now share the apps you like directly to your Facebook page. You just have to drag the app you like to the statusbar and a popup will show up. They also added a app so you can see what apps your friends shared!
Another new option is the “Automatic Brightness” option. This option can be found here: Settings –> Display –> Brightness. Here’s a list of some other new functions:
- New smooth screen on/off animation
- Ability to change playlist order
- Enable/disable extensions
- Some small UI changes (Folder icon, Widgets icon)
- Google Talk with videocalling support
There is one thing though that Sony Ericsson didn’t add to the PLAY update but did add to the Arc and Neo update..The 3D Panorama app. With that app you should be able to make 3D panorama pictures by just panning your device.I tried to install the Arc app on my PLAY, but I got this message: “Camera not available”. So let’s hope the dev’s at XDA will port it to PLAY!
Thanks to Bin4ry it’s possible to root the new firmware! Just check out this thread at XDA.
The firmware for the PLAY can be found here
The firmware for the Arc can be found here
The firmware for the Neo can be found here

Weird ‘take screenshot’ icon. I love se’s icon collection but this one is bad. Feels like ‘ + ‘ icon in a calculator.

Lovely with “Automatic Brightness”!
The original X10 with OS 1.6 hade this feature from start, but it disapear after that. Missing!
It’s just a viewfinder icon. Not bad, not good.
Cheers guys! Xperia PLAY now also has HD Video recording with continuous autofocus!

Got it on my Arc, too.
Runs really well so far. Better RAM managment and no lag or whatever so far.
Really good work from Sony Ericsson.
Only thing left is that they release the sources so DoomLord can fix the bug in the beta kernel for this firmware.
Edit:
Kust noticed that automatic brightness in on by default on the Arc, I don’t have the thing to select it in “brightness”
I just noticed we, PLAY users, got HD recording too!
Just recorded a movie. 1280*720 with 30fps!
WOW!
And I just noticed that I can now zoom in HD videos.
Really awesome update from SE
[...] The new OS flavor will not be pushed to all Xperia handsets at the same time, but the roll-out will be performed sequentially. More info on the OS upgrade will emerge in the near future, so stay tuned. (via) [...]

How did you get Automatic Brightness?
Which phone and which firmware version? Mine doesn’t have it?
What does screen animation look like?
Lol, I hoped Swipe panorama will available for all 2011 models, but it seems it’s only for Arc and Neo, which is kinda logical.

I gotta admit SE is doing really good with the 2011 Xperias. The UI looks and performs real nice, and they are frequently giving software support. Had they kept the hardware on par with the competition, and they could at least take on the likes of, say, LG.
LG‘s support is awful. Worser than SE was in 2010

I also got the update and it looks fine, but I can’t find the Swype keyboard anywhere.

Nevermind I found it, but it wasn’t easy
Go to settings -> Language & keyboard -> International keyboard -> Text input settings -> Swipe to write
Sorry for the double post.

How much does T9 Trace feature improve typing speed/ accuracy ? I find it rather hard, even on Arc, to type on the onscreen keyboard (notice that I never had a smartphone, maybe this fixes after a while)
Well… You have to learn to use the full qwerty keyboard ^^
You are a pro after 200 texts xD
Only the play will have this option to enable/disable auto brightness?
I think so. Arc hasn’t it.
@ TOWI:
T9 works perfect on Arc. Screen is big enough for it.
Qwerty is no problem, too. Swype is good for one hand typing.
If you have a problem, just use landscape to get bigger letters.
But normally you can type good after a lot of texting.
Automatic brightness is activated by default…
