Android Goes Adult!

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

.

It’s official, Android is now “adult” and I don’t mean that as a metaphor for the platform growing up through development towards 2.0 Eclair.

The Android Market, like the Apple AppStore, prohibits mature/adult content so anyone thinking of making “naughty” apps has been left out in the cold. However, unlike the iPhone, Android allows users to install apps from third party sources with a tick in one simple check box, this means that developers of  apps which would not be allowed in the Market  are actually free to publish them elsewhere.

Well that elsewhere has now been provided by MiKandi.com and the MiKandi App Store, the “world’s first adult only mobile app store”. Here’s a look at their promo video:

There will always be contentious views over things like this but however you look at it, there’s a huge market for adult content on all media and this could in fact become a huge boost for Android! The concerns though are the lack of parental guidance and that’s something that Google may now look to implement.

Aino Software Fault – Stock Kept At Warehouse

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

It’s not been a good week for Sony Ericsson, as we reported first Satio has been pulled from sale by the UK’s two largest mobile retailers and now Aino is facing problems too. Both Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U have apparently not taken delivery of new Aino units for sale until unspecified software faults are addressed. A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson confirmed the problem, saying that Sony Ericsson was “… aware of a reported software issue regarding the Aino handset and using the touchscreen interface in particular“. The spokesperson stressed that as only a handful of units had been sold in the UK to date the problem wouldn’t affect too many people.

Stock of Aino is apparently being held at warehouses until the software issues are addressed. One staff member told Mobile Today “We were waiting for the Aino but then we were told there are Blue Tooth software problems with it and that they are being held back in the warehouse“. A Sony Ericsson source contacted by Mobile Today said “All new products are being shipped in and anything in the channel will get reflashed at Sony Ericsson’s cost“.

Sony Ericsson have said that they expect Satio to go back on sale in a matter of days, not weeks, and the problems with Aino are apparently not related to the problems Satio has experienced. However, given how high profile these handsets were made to their image may be forever tarnished in the eyes of consumers and might simply reinforce an image of Sony Ericsson producing poor quality handsets after the trouble the manufacturer had with the likes of the W910, K850 and W580.

The effect of all this on Sony Ericsson itself is said to be depressing with Mobile Today quoting sources close to the company as saying “This is going to kill them – they are being slowly killed. Internally, people are wanting to leave, motivation is terrible“. The first half of this year has seen Sony Ericsson’s UK market share drop from 21% to 15% and these fresh problems are sure to take a heavy toll on the beleaguered company. At this point the only bright spot for Sony Ericsson seems to be the X10.

Sony Ericsson Likes Android

se-nse-se-android-logo

We’re currently expanding towards Android and it seems Sony Ericsson are liking that direction too. You don’t need reminding about the Xperia X10 which will be SE’s first Android based device but what we haven’t really heard before is how they feel about Android itself.

Well over on the SE Product Blog Rikard Skogberg has offered his thoughts on the platform after spending some time with the X10. It seems Android is making a good impression too as Rikard likes how smooth the OS feels as well as the number of apps available and the innovative spirit that surrounds them.

Head over and read the rest of the article for more thoughts: Some Personal Thoughts Around The Android OS

Calling On The X10

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

You probably didn’t think you needed telling how to make calls but Sony Ericsson thought they’d provide a tutorial anyway. Seeing as we like to see as much as possible regarding the X10’s progress we thought it was worth a look so here you go:

Google gPhone A-Go-Go?

gPhone Mockup

Some of you will probably have already seen the rumours of the gPhone, a handset purported to be Google branded and promoted by the internet giant. To be fair rumours of a gPhone have been around for a while now, the initial rumours eventually coalescing into the Android OS and the G1. However, these latest rumours seem to be a bit more firm and look to be taken seriously by more than a few commentators.

What’s so interesting about these latest rumours is the idea that Google is planning “an all-out assault on the mobile phone market”. What does that mean? Well The Times is reporting that it will feature a buuilt in advanced version of Google Voice for “the first extensive Google phone service with unlimited free calls”. Such a phone, running Android, would be the first time one company basically controlled everything on the phone, from the software to the firmware to the calls themselves. That would be a serious move if it proved to be true because it would offer a direct challenge, not only to the established manufacturers, but to the networks too.

In terms of specs there is obviously not much to go on at this stage, but the Times mentions that it will be “… one of the most advanced smartphones, with a large touchscreen display an a [Qualcomm] processor almost twice as fast as the one powering Apple’s iPhone 3G S”. Predictions are that it will run the Flan version of Android, which will reportedly usher in high performance 3D gaming for Android.

The big problem for Google though is that if they do release something like this, and reports are saying it could be out as soon as early next year, it would lay down the gauntlet to the mobile networks. With the ability to make unlimited free calls using Google Voice  the networks would essentially become dumb pipes providing nothing more than a connection. Networks don’t seem to like that proposal as has been shown time and time again (NTT DoCoMo aside). If the networks feel that a gPhone challenges their profit margins or relegates them to a back seat role will they be prepared to subsidise it? If not then what are the options open to Google? Well not many except selling the handset directly to consumers and we all know how expensive high-end SIM free handsets can be. Will consumers pay? They seem willing to pay high prices for the iPhone and maybe a high initial cost coupled with unlimited free calls might just be enough to sell it.

Pureness 2 In The Works

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

It looks like Pureness wasn’t a one off, at least according to the Mirror. They spoke with the man who designed the Pureness, Daniel Mauritzson, who said that Sony Ericsson are already working on a follow-up to Pureness. Interestingly though it looks like they aren’t seeking to add more to Purneess 2, but rather make it even simpler. How much simpler it can get I’m not sure, but they’re trying anyway. The idea is apparently to offer a counter-balance to the eve more feature packed phones we see being released.

Mr Mauritzson did hint that the focus would e very much on the software in Pureness 2 rather than the hardware. He said that Pureness itself had beena  challenge for Sony Ericsson’s designers because of the monochrome screen, which forced them to think in terms of things like high-contrast icons. Pureness took 2 years to develop (who would have guessed simplicity took so long?), so Purneess 2 will probably be just as long on the drawig board before it sees the light of day.

Google Maps Navigation Released For Donut

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

As we know, Android 2.0 Eclair received a great update to Google Maps providing it with turn-by-turn navigation but until now it wasn’t available for other devices without “hacking”…heaven forbid! Well that’s all changing now as Google has released Google Maps 3.2.1 to the Android Market with Navigation for 1.6 Donut devices.

I’d test it out to let you know what it’s like but the installation is currently not working properly on my Cyanogen 4.2.5 ROM, there’s got to be some irony in there somewhere! So if you’re unrooted just go grab the Market update, it’s free of course, and if not then try find a work-around for the installation as I’m doing just now ;)

Update:

If, like me, you have been getting an installation error saying that “Package file was not signed correctly” try the following to remove your current maps apk:

Connect to adb and open a command prompt/terminal:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/*Maps*
adb shell rm /system/sd/app/*Maps*
adb uninstall com.google.android.apps.maps

After this the update via the Market worked fine but I don’t see any sign of Navigation here in the UK
