Say hello to Sony Ericsson W902 (and W595, again)

Friday, July 11th, 2008

The Sony Ericsson W902 has just been leaked at SE4M, as well as a few teasers at Esato. This phone is codenamed Patti, and is basically a Walkman branded C902 with a few changes, such as dedicated music controls on the side.

Also leaked earlier on was the W595. While I was on a short vacation, additional pictures have surfaced the web of this one – some of Esato and some on Myphone.gr. They don’t really show much, and the ones from Myphone.gr are just as blurry as the first leaks, so I didn’t include either. I’m sure you’ll be able to find them, if you’re good with Google. If not, let me know.

I’ve included the many photos of W902 just below. Both this one and W595 will be announced on July 22nd at a Walkman / music gig. I think another phone will be announced here as well – not the T610 remake, though, this is for a later announcement this year.

Sony Ericsson may acquire Spice Mobile

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Sweden-based Sony Ericsson, the world’s fourth largest cellphone vendor, is in talks to acquire India-based Spice Mobile, reports the Economic Times. Spice Mobile, a BK Modi company, has a range of GSM and CDMA handsets under the Spice brand. The company had announced a sub-$20 phone devoid of a display screen in February at the Mobile World Congress.

Spice Mobile has a market capitalisation of round Rs 177 crore with its shares closing at Rs 22.7 on Thursday on the Bombay Stock Exchange. However, Modi is looking for Rs 80 – 100 per share, which values Spice Mobile at around Rs 700 crore. Modi had last month exited his other telecom entity, Spice Telecom, a carrier operational in two circles of Punjab and Karnataka.

Gallery: Sony Ericsson BeiBei / G702

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Here we’ve got a rather nice little gallery of the cancelled Sony Ericsson G702, codenamed BeiBei, for you. This is – of course – a prototype, build AP 1.1. This gallery will also teach you a thing or two about how prototype boxes look, and what they contain. Only the most normal stuff, nothing fancy. Enjoy!

By the way… I’ll be taking a small vacation, and won’t be back till Thursday.

Sony Ericsson selects GlobalFun for mobile content

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Sony Ericsson recently selected Swedish mobile games developer and publisher GlobalFun as one of its two official content acquisition partner for the upcoming PlayNow Arena and Fun & Downloads services.

As of now, there are no official statements from Sony Ericsson, but a few from GlobalFun.

- We have since the beginning of our business aimed to provide our customers, of which Sony Ericsson is a highly valued one, with high quality premium content. This appointment serves for us as a proof that our strategy on content acquisition and account management has been and still is the correct one, says Bertil Krumnack, EVP Sales & Business Development at GlobalFun.

Also commenting on the deal was GlobalFun CEO, Marcus Johansson.

The trust that Sony Ericsson is showing us by appointing us as one of two content acquisition partners is very flattering. We will do our very best to exceed the expectations in this area and to continue to grow our mutual business, says Marcus.

In my opinion, Sony Ericsson could easily have picked a better games developer than GlobalFun. Sure, their games are okay, but there are many other developers out there that publish better games. A 5-year contract has been signed to ensure close cooperations between the two companies.

Leak: Sony Ericsson W595 / Linda

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Linda has been a known codename for quite some time now, but until now we really haven’t had any phones to match with the codename. Today, a bunch of photos of the upcoming W595 – W580 successor – leaked on Journaldugeek.

The W595 is very much like the W580 when it comes to its design. It is – in my opinion – a bit more slick, but the colours and the overall look is very much like W580’s. As far as I know, this will also come in a white & red colour variant.

W595 is a Walkman phone, featuring the Walkman 3 player, as well as an FM radio. It is based on the A2 software platform, and will come bundled with the location services, including Google Maps. W595 will also feature a fully-specced 3-dimensional accelerometer, unlike the 2-dimensional one present in W580.

The W595 will be announced in a matter of days or weeks for the July music product announcement. The T610 remake will not be part of this announcement. More photos at the link below.

Gallery: Sony Ericsson W760

Friday, July 4th, 2008

The Sony Ericsson W760 is Sony Ericsson’s first Walkman phone with a built-in GPS unit. Other than that, it is one of a few super hot Walkman sliders. Here’s our large gallery of this black diamond.

I can’t decide on whether I’m going to review the C902 or W760 first. What do you guys think?

Gallery: Sony Ericsson C902

Friday, July 4th, 2008

The new Sony Ericsson C902 just landed at my doorstep, and it’s a really nice handset with a very sturdy feel to it. The first impression is rather good, but the space around the display seems wasted, even though there are eight touch sensitive camera shortcuts.

Now, on to our large gallery of this metallic sharpshooter. I hope you’ll like the photos – I’ve started shooting them in another way, that – in my opinion – looks way better than what I’ve previously been trying out.

Along with the C902 also came the W760 – watch out for that one soon!

Video: C702 splash-test in the toilet!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Here’s a rather unconventional video. The guy in the video apparently decided to put the C702’s splash proofness to the test, and put it in the toilet and flushed… and it survived. Impressive :)

Sony Ericsson G700 preview

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The G700 is Sony Ericsson’s cheapest smart phone to date, and it’s probably also the nicest one to use. Is it a bargain or a failure? You can read our preview of the G700 to find out :)

PS. It’s not a failure… :D
