Sony Ericsson W302 - W880 in disguise?

Along with the W595 and W902, also announced the Sony Ericsson W302. It’s a low-end Walkman phone, yet it packs a decent featureset for its class. It is a quad-band GSM phone with GPRS/EDGE support.
The W302 is very much similar to the S302. This means it features a 2 mega pixel camera (fixed focus), a 2 inch 176 x 220 pixel TFT display (up to 262.144 colours), FM radio, TrackID, 3D Java gaming, PictBridge, blogging, and more.

W302 measures 100 x 46 x 10.5 millimetres, and not only the size but also the design will get you to think of the very popular W880.
- To deliver Walkman phones that target all segments of the market has always been our aim since the successful launch of our first - the W800, said Ben Padley, Head of the Music Category at Sony Ericsson, and continued:
- It has always been our vision to deliver music on the go to the masses, by developing a range that caters to a wide variety of requirements, tastes and price-points. Our new W302 phone is our most affordable Walkman phone to date, without compromising on the premium feel and stylish design that customers expect of Sony Ericsson. The W302 is also a perfect match for the new portable MPS-100 speakers, launched today, which are small and compact enough to fit in your pocket.
It comes with a 512 MB memory card in the sales package. Sony Ericsson expects to launch the W302 in Q4. It will be launched in two colour variants; Midnight Black and Sparkling White.

So its almost identical to the W350i? Only differences are slightly higher MP count (2 instead of 1.3), Pictbridge, aluminium casing parts and quadband (and of course this one has no flip). Its not bad as a product, but there are 2 things that annoy me. One, if it is slightly better than the W350i, then should it not have a slightly higher index? But more importantly, given that both products are so similar (apparently identical in music playback capabilities) is there a need at all to release both? Just make one of them quadband and release that one so it can be used anywhere, then forget the other one. Sales of these two wont generate too much revenue anyway. I am confused because I own a W350i, and it makes itself an acceptable MP3 player as well as a phone, but it is hardly anything new or revolutionary really. I am shocked that they are still living in the past and thinking of the W800i as so high and mighty, rather than attempting to make a current time remake of it. I’m not impressed by this rehashed solution. They announced and released almost the same thing months ago.
10:47 am on 7/22/08@Tigershark: Well this phone has the new naming system, while the W350i uses the old conventions. So that’s what the naming differences are all about. You can’t compare two phones by name if they don’t use the same naming systems.
And I think there is a place for both. The W302 caters for those who just want a candybar phone, and the W350i has the unique flip design, for those who want something a little different.
11:09 am on 7/22/08About the naming: I suppose thats true, but I think it will only serve to confuse the buyer.
11:54 am on 7/22/08Its all well and good to sell one with and one without a flip, but I have a feeling they will be competing with each other for sales, something SE should not allow given their current financial situation. The differences between these two handsets are just too subtle. People buying from the low end category will tend not to pay so much attention to the slight differences. Its usually just the high end buyers who will be more picky. That said, I dont see how having both available will generate more profit.
They offer choice in the segment, people complain. They have too few models in a segment, people complain. They update a stellar phone from previous generation and make it accessible to low end consumers, guess what… PEOPLE STILL COMPLAIN~!
Jeez~!
