Shiho is the codename of the upcoming Cyber-shot flagship model from Sony Ericsson, and we’ve got everything about it! Its final name will be C905, and it’ll be announced along with some phones on the 17th of this month. In this post we’ll announce it for Sony Ericsson, and save them the trouble, plus give the competitors a little something to wee their pants about.
The C905 is the latest camera offering from Sony Ericsson featuring a fully spec’d 8.1 mega pixel camera with auto focus, face recognition, a new feature called Smart Contrast, image stabilization, BestPic, red-eye reduction, xenon flash as well as photoflash for both photos and videos. It’s got a video stabilizer feature as well. You can geo-tag your photos with the built-in GPS with further support for A-GPS, and the large camera resolution makes it possible to do prints in up to A3 sizes! Your photos will automatically flip to landscape mode, when you tilt your phone, as it’s got a built-in accelerometer. You’ll be able to watch your photos on a beautiful 2.4 inch QVGA-resolution scratch-resistant mineral glass TFT display. Feel like sharing your photos on a TV-set? That’s possible as well with the TV-Out Cable ITC-60, also to be announced on the 17th.
That’s not all, though… C905 will be the first feature phone by Sony Ericsson to sport built-in WiFi with DLNA-support, so all media in your home can be shared. It’s also got the latest in Bluetooth connections, supports USB 2.0 data transfers, and can be synchronized with Exchange ActiveSync.
The Sony Ericsson C905 measures 104 x 49 x 18 (19.5) millimetres, and weighs a massive 136 grams. It’ll be available in Copper Gold, Ice Silver & Night Black in early Q4, with a bundled 2 GB Memory Stick Micro M2. It comes in three variants, two with full support for UMTS and HSDPA in the certain regions (even America). The battery is good for 380 hours of standby or 9 hours of talk on GSM networks, or 360 hours of standby or 4 hours of talk on 3G networks.

3:34 am on 6/11/08Honestly a really nice looking phone - similar in most respects to the N95 - nice 8.1 cam with xenon is an excellent feature. Seriously touch-screens are over-rated. If this thing pairs up with a bluetooth keyboard you’re much better off than with that *cough* POS thing from Cupertino
One final thought is the screen is a bit disappointing VGA is really a minimum on a high end phone nowdays and I guess optical zoom would have been a nice touch.

5:18 am on 6/11/08Michell, are you sure about those UMTS/HSDPA frequencies for the American version? I didn’t know 3G/UMTS existed on 900 mhz in the USA much less anywhere else. Perhaps you mean 1900 mhz. In any case I was hoping it would support T-Mobile USA’s new 3G/HSDPA which is 1700 mhz. I know Sony Ericsson is trying to get T-Mobile USA to carry its handsets so 1700 is a necessity.
Also, is there any word if the supposed fast port Wi-Fi enabler will be announced on the 17th?

Does make me a bit curious though…feels a bit strange that SE directly jumped to a 8.1 mp camera handset from a 5mp one. I had assumed they’d have liked to advance gradually, first moving up to 7+ mp and then go onto offer higher specs. Megapixels don’t matter as much as the camera quality goes, but that’s an argument you’ll hear mostly from logical buyers. A lot of people,I believe, will still argue with you that a higher megapixel count means a better camera.
7:39 am on 6/11/08Hmm, unless they have significantly improved the optics over the k850i and Nokia N95 (in turn, making the phone thicker), the 8.1 MP does not mean squat (just a megapixel marketing game at this point). In fact, aside from the Xenon flash, it does not seem to have any advantage over the N95, and none at all over the N82. (Which, BTW, is a S60 smartphone). The N95, on its end, does have larger screens (2.8″ for the 8GB models).
As usual, I’d love to see SE succeed (if only to give the arrogant Nokia some competition), but they are, again, offering too little, too late.
7:49 am on 6/11/08we wouldnt noe as is had not even been released. im quite sure sony would have done something to fix c905 ever since they’ve seen disastrous display of k850 tt resulted in their fall in market share AND revenue this year. hopefully we’ll see a much better camaraphone. As for comparison with N95, i guess its a different league since N95 is marketed as a smartphone instead of a dedicated camara phone. yet, i guess camara wise, like hlorri said, sony better pack in some hell lot better camara lens in it. if not, it’ll end up as disastrous as k850.

Can I ask too, are you aware if Nokia is intending to come out with a 8 megapixel camera phone too? The feeling I get is that Nokia wants to milk the 5 megapixel camera til the very last drop in all its possible variant before they come out the 8 megapixel camera phones, which I think, seems likely for next June, at the earliest. Do you know otherwise? Thanks a lot!
10:25 am on 6/11/08The 8.1 mp camera is probably because of the new image sensors (announced a month or so ago - http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/27/omnivision-claims-8-megapixel-omnibsi-sensor-will-turn-cellphone/) that is supposed to deliver MUCH improved image quality. That’s probably why they are skipping 6, 7 etc. mp camera sensors.

12:35 pm on 6/11/08Remains to be seen whether those A3 prints actually will look good. Since they do not mention what type of sensor the camera will have, I assume that it’s CMOS again. The sample shots from Sony’s EXMOR sensor as used in the SO905iCS are not not better than what the K850i can deliver, so I hope the above is not just more marketing talk.

If you look at the C702 (splash water resistant) it seems that it has GPS because it’s a ’sports’ model.
Nokia 5500 (toss and drown model) was also the more exceptional one with an accelerometer.
This one adds scratch resistance for it’s screen apparently.
Is this finally also a water- dust- shock resistant phone?

Looks great…. BUT…
If the lens is the same as the one on the K8xx models, and has bad purple fringing issues, then it’s a No-no.

I have emailed SE to ask when this phone will be available to buy in the UK. They replied “we don’t know, we don’t have a release date yet”. I am really annoyed, fancy showing it to everyone on their website, getting me all fired up to buy it, and then tell me not only that it isn’t available yet, but to say that they don’t know when it will be, not even necessarily this YEAR?! All that does is annoy people. They should at least be able to say roughly when it will be released if they have got far enough to market it as “coming soon”. This phone looks SUPERB.

11:47 am on 6/28/08Look, I don’t know what everyone is so hyped up about. 8.1 mega pixels??? When I heard about the phone at first hand, I got excited about it being released in the UK in about October 2008 but when I tried out the Sony Ericsson C903 with 5 mega pixels, I was surprised to see that the camera quality wasn’t even as good as my W610i’s 2 mega pixel camera. The focus is great, I can zoom in up to 16 times till I see pixelation, but the colour quality is a big let down due to the poor camera sensor. Loads of ‘picture noise’ in darker areas too, the K850i Has better sensoring. If someone would like to prove me wrong about this, please send me a sample macro photo of a flower or a landscape picture of a city
I will be getting the K850i instead of the C905. And the other reviewers are quite right, 8.1 mega pixel cameras should at least have a proper optical zoom lens like the 10 mega pixel Samsung SCH-B600 with x3 optical zoom just to point out, and Samsung aren’t supposed to be that good at cameras.
