Review: Sony Ericsson Z770

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

We’ve just finished up on our Z770 review. Z770 is quite an interesting device, and the design is indeed very much appealing, although far from perfect. The features are a bit above average, and the software platform is superb, with only very minor bugs.

Because the Z770 is very much like the K660 that we’ve already reviewed, we’ve removed a few parts of the Z770 review in order for us not to repeat it over again. If you feel like you’re missing something, please have a look at the K660 review, or contact us.

By the way, this has to be the review with the most pictures in all of USEB’s soon-to-be 1-year history!

Check out the review right here, and please let us know if we’ve made any mistakes.

Sony Ericsson’s Next Announcement

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

It seems like a few people have already noticed the new poll on the sidebar. My question was when you guys think the next announcement will be. I knew the answer when adding the poll, and was interested in seeing what you guys thought, before I’d reveal it :-)

The correct answer would be “Within 4 weeks”. The next product announcement is going to be at CommunicAsia in about a month’s time (the 17th of June). If everything goes by plan, a number of 5-6 devices will be announced, including both BeiBei (G702) and Paris.

While we’re at G702… Its camera is amazing! Yes, it’s a fixed focus camera sensor, but my god, it’s one of the best I’ve ever seen! I’ve got a few photo samples here, and the quality of these is definitely on par with the K770, if not better. The amount of details is amazing, and so goes for the colour saturation. You really can’t compare it with i.e. the W890 or W980. The photos I’ve got are still confidential, and can’t be shared, but I think we’ll have a few 100 % crops – make that full size samples – ready for you in a few days, if everything goes by plan :-) Once again, it’s amazing!

The Transsyberia Rally 2008 Takes C702 On A Bumpy Ride

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Sony Ericsson is one of the official partners of the Transsyberia Rally 2008. Sony Ericsson will be sending out its C702 Cyber-shot phone on the over 4,300-mile long rally from Russia through Siberia into Mongolia.

During this long rally, the rally teams will be blogging from the C702, and every photo they take of the event will be geo-tagged immediately for the world to follow. Apart from that, the C702 is dust and water splash resistant, making it ideal for an event like this.

You can read more about the Transsyberia Rally 2008 at the official website.

BeiBei Has Been Leaked At The FCC

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Ah yes – the FCC has once again leaked a device before Sony Ericsson has announced it. This time it’s the Japanese-styled BeiBei. I quite like the design of BeiBei – or should I say G702? – although it seems to be marketed at women.

Along with lots of leaked external and internal photos of G702, a set of test results and the internal user manual was published as well. The user manual confirms just about every single thing we’ve told you about BeiBei earlier on, but to sum it up;

- Built-in GPS with WayFinder and Google Maps
- Opera Mobile 9.5 with web widgets
- WLAN
- UIQ 3.3
- The new user interface as in G700/G900

Oh yes – did I forget to mention that it’s got HSDPA, even though it’s running the old hardware platform? Well, that’s what the user manual says – and firmware strings for that matter!

Check out the FCC reports here and here. The most interesting reports including photos are this one and this one.

X1 White Paper Revision Reveals 256 MB RAM

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Five days ago, Sony Ericsson published the second, revised version of the X1 whitepaper.

As always, there’ll be a few moments of pure druelling and awe, but once that’s over, some people might notice a few changes. One of the changes is that the X1 now comes with 256 megabytes of RAM memory compared to 128 megabytes in the release version. This is major! This basically means that the X1 will be a lot faster, and its multitasking abilities will be greatly enhanced by this.

Another thing I noticed was some amazing battery life times. In standby, Sony Ericsson had measured standby times up to 580 hours on GSM networks, while the X1 came up to an amazing 833 hours of standby on UMTS. Wow! It’s impressive what a 1500 mAh battery can do for a phone.

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Sony Ericsson has just released a set of new demo tours. This means that the total demo tour portfolio now includes the tough C702, the stylish personal organiser G700 and the multifunctional G900. This also means that these phones are about ready to be shipped. Once again – it’s impossible not to be impressed by Sony Ericsson’s remarkable skills when it comes to these videos… wow.

The C702 features a built-in GPS used for geotagging your 3.2 mega pixel camera snaps, as well as finding your way in the city with Google Maps and WayFinder.

By the way – my next shipment of review phones will include the C902, G900 and W760. I’m hoping to get these within a few weeks, so I’ll have plenty of free time to review them.

Video: Sony Ericsson’s Upcoming Multi-Device

Friday, May 16th, 2008

I bet some of you have checked out the JavaOne conferences, but obviously no-one has gone through them in depth. In one of the videos, Rikko Sakaguchi at Sony Ericsson actually leaks an upcoming phone, well, sort of… After having showcased the video below at the JavaOne conference, Sakaguchi says “actually… you saw the device in the video? That’s something that we’re going to launch this year.” However! If we look closely at a few screenshots from the video, you’ll notice that there’s actually two devices, and not one. Could this be different prototypes for one phone? I mean, Sakaguchi did say “the device”.

Remember, Rikko Sakaguchi is the Senior Vice-President and Head of Product & Application Planning at Sony Ericsson, so it doesn’t get much more official than this.

I must remind you though that this video is almost 2 years old, so a few things might have changed. Now, feel free to let your minds wander.

Usher To Push Sony Ericsson’s Music Marketing

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

It’s no secret that music artist Usher has been lucky enough to get a hold of several hot Sony Ericsson phones to use in his music videos months before they were out.

Now, Sony Ericsson has signed Usher to promote a few of their upcoming Walkman music phones in a major music marketing push. The two Walkman phones in question are the W350 and W980. This marketing push will span over 20 European countries (lots of coverage!), and will also include sponsorship rights for his upcoming full European tour later in the year. This is definitely a clear sign that Sony Ericsson will continue their strong focus on music, and especially the Walkman brand.

- Working with an artist such as Usher is an ideal fit for us.  Here we are at the start of an electrifying launch campaign, poised to deliver a totally 360 degree experience for all consumers and Usher fans alike, it’s truly an exciting prospect, said John Bernard, who’s responsible for marketing at Sony Ericsson to MobileToday.co.uk.
