Paris Questions & Answers Round
As something new we’ll have a questions & answers round regarding the upcoming ‘Paris’ phone from Sony Ericsson. We’ll try to answer your questions, but please note that we far from know everything there is to know about it. Serious questions only, please.
SE-NSE users, please make use of the commenting system on the blog instead of asking at the forum thread (makes it easier for me and you to keep track of the questions and what has already been asked).
PS. Sorry about all the posts about Paris lately, it must be awfully boring. Unfortunately there are no real other Sony Ericsson news to post about at the moment.

FAR from boring–especially when many of us have been waiting for this since November. Keep it coming.
Question: In your opinion, which is the most likely resolution for the screen given that VGA has been on the cards since the beginning, but that QVGA has been used for some prototypes? If it is QVGA, do you think that will detract from the overall device?
Any ideas about a 3.5mm jack?
7:12 pm on 4/5/08Does the handset support HSDPA and HSUPA, and if so at what speeds?
7:17 pm on 4/5/08what is the resolution of the screen in paris?
7:20 pm on 4/5/08and what is it’s size?i wana know because it donot look huge (as it should be) from pics.
finger touch intended?
every feature of P1i included?
xenon? optical zoom?
what is on sides?
what buttons are on front?
7:22 pm on 4/5/08Are there any detail on the type of flash the phone uses, and if the camera is autofocus? Also, what resolution is the screen?
7:28 pm on 4/5/08Would it slide in vertical and horizontal ways ?
7:35 pm on 4/5/08Would the new UIQ 3.3 would show more caller detailes like WM phones ?
7:37 pm on 4/5/08I liked the UIQ platform more than WM and X1
My question is simple “When can we expect P5″? What do you like the most on this new P series phone? Are 2 context keys above the display touch sensitive? Do you know anything about RAM and ROM memory?
Thanks
Martin Chroust

Does the videocam support VGA 30fps?
7:39 pm on 4/5/08Will try to reply like this.
Display resolution: QVGA or VGA (not sure!). No, I don’t think a QVGA display will be bad on Paris. Actually that makes it possible to install many games and applications that are already out on the market.
Do not think there is a 3.5 mm jack, but I am not sure.
HSDPA is supported, while HSUPA is mentioned a couple of times in the early firmwares.
Well, it’s quite small in size. Probably about 10.5 centimetres long and 4-5 centimetres wide.
If “finger touch” means like on G900 then that should be the case, yes. No xenon flash, and I’m 99% sure there’s no optical zoom. FastPort connector and function keys are on the sides. Front features a d-pad and two call keys.
Camera is a 5 mega pixel camera with auto focus.
Expect Paris in shops in late Q3. I’d probably say I like the new design, UIQ 3.3 and multimedia features the most. Which context keys? No information on RAM / ROM memory.
I expect VGA @ 30 fps, but I am not sure.
7:41 pm on 4/5/08Accept- and hang up button seem to be in hardware button at the bottom of the phone. But are there other buttons between the D-Pad and the screen?
How is the touch screen protected from unwanted operations? Lock button like on G700/G900?
7:57 pm on 4/5/08Awesome. Thank you.
With the “elegant” materials used on Paris, does that mean the screen will be scratch-resistant like the mineral glass used on the K850?
262,000 colors or 16 mil?
7:58 pm on 4/5/08thanks,
what is advantages over G900/P1i?
8:00 pm on 4/5/08Thanks, sorry, I missed there aren’t any context keys… do you know when will be P5i announced?
8:03 pm on 4/5/08I don’t think there are other buttons on the front than those. I don’t have an answer on whether the display is protected from unwanted operations nor if it has a lock button like those two.
The amount of displays colours, I think, is dependant on what display it is.
Advantages are obvious, aren’t they?
It should be announced end of May.
8:05 pm on 4/5/08What processor Paris will use? I hope better than the old one that used in P1 and P990
8:05 pm on 4/5/08not really…
8:07 pm on 4/5/08Darknoob, I am not sure, sorry.
8:08 pm on 4/5/08And what about JogDial, will we find it on the sides?
8:15 pm on 4/5/08I want to ask:
8:17 pm on 4/5/08Does it also support full office,
like Word, Excel and Powerpoint editor?
(This is present on Quickoffice 4.0….)
How would you rate deuxani’s current rendering? How good does it representate the phone?
8:17 pm on 4/5/08‘I’d probably say I like the new design, UIQ 3.3 and multimedia features the most.’
8:39 pm on 4/5/08What multimedia features make it stand out from existing handsets? How is the media player?
Is there any sign of an accelerometer? Gesture control, or any other such rare features?
Also, any indications of memory capacity, or MS support?
8:43 pm on 4/5/08It doesn’t look like there is a jog dial.
No idea on QuickOffice.
Deuxani’s photoshop is very accurate - but you should be able to compare it quite easily as well, given that we’ve already posted front pictures
Well, some may have seen the changes in G700/G900 compared to P1/W960. That should be about the same as on Paris. I have not tried it personally, so I cannot go into further details on this.
Do not know about accelerometer, gesture control nor the memory card type.
8:49 pm on 4/5/08its “Paris Questions & Answers Round” or “you ask and i tell not sure…dont know”
8:55 pm on 4/5/08when you dont know sth for sure just dont post it and keep it in your mind and leave it till you know every thing and then surprise us.
thank you.
Well. I’ve been unsure about the screen ratio.
Are there any hint’s about “cousins” of Paris in the video?
9:09 pm on 4/5/08Paker,
I let you take care of your business, and you let me take care of my business. Capisce?
Helmchen,
No.
9:15 pm on 4/5/08@Michell Bak,
9:19 pm on 4/5/08That’s right! (Referring to your latest post)
Paker: you’re the one who needs to “sth”. Michell is answering every question he knows the answer to, he’s doing his best to quench our thirst for information. Keep in mind that he’s never actually seen the device, the only knowledge he has of it comes from a VIDEO. How can the power of a processor be determined from this?
And if you don’t want to be teased by phones that aren’t on sale yet, you have no business in a Sony Ericsson blog.
To Michell, thank you for delivering us the only worthwhile leak us SE fans have gotten so far this year. That’s all.
9:23 pm on 4/5/08Thanks for doing this! This is the best SE blog on the net!
1. Does the camera software allow for “touch focus” like some of the newly-announced Cybershot phones?
2. Is there geo-tagging for photos?
9:31 pm on 4/5/08Does it have TV-out like Nokia N95?
9:34 pm on 4/5/08Does it have something like proximity sensors that saves power by adjusting brightness depending on lighting condition?
9:39 pm on 4/5/08RoyleMoyle,
Thanks! It should have that (and there are no Cyber-shot branded phones with that feature yet, by the way)
I am not sure whether geo-tagging will be native or not. But in theory it is possible.
SuperInggo,
I do not know about that, but I can’t see any proximiy sensors. TV-out - I don’t think so.
9:47 pm on 4/5/08@Michell,
Q1: Ok it doesn’t have a xenon flash… But does it have a LED flash atleast???
If yes, is it single or double LED flash???
Q2: Any idea if it has stereo speakers or just a single one???
Q3: Have you seen on which side is the fast port located on??? On the left side, is that a mini USB port???
Q4: Does it have volume and camera buttons??? I think it does but can you please confirm???
Q5: What is the length of the video of Paris that you have???
Q6: What is the camera lens cover like??? Is it slider lens cover like K790, swivel like P990 or automatic like K850???
I would really appreciate if you can answer all the questions above…
Thanks for everything related to paris…
10:05 pm on 4/5/08Harry,
1. If it has an LED flash, it has to be behind the camera cover.
2. No idea about the speakers. Think it’s mono.
3. Fastport is on the left side.
4. I’ve only got a side view of the left side, and it seems there are some volume keys (looks like +, -).
5. I’m not the one here at the blog with the video, so I’m afraid I can’t tell you
6. It’s a sliding cover that slides down. Looks quite minimalistic.
10:12 pm on 4/5/08if not proximity sensor, shall i call it ambient light sensor? it’s present in K810i and latter models so it’s probably hidden somewhere in P5i? =)
10:16 pm on 4/5/08I know what it is, but I can’t see it anywhere on Paris
10:17 pm on 4/5/08Thanks!!!
1. Hmm… That means chances of a flash are less as I can’t recall any phone with flash behind the lens cover…
4. Volume keys on the left??? That’s a surprise… Hope they move it on the right side before announcing…
6. Lens cover slides down when the phone is hold horizontally, right???
10:18 pm on 4/5/08Might be that there is an LED, maybe it’s just at the top, right behind the cover. And yes, it’s sliding down when horizontal.
10:23 pm on 4/5/08Do you think Paris will live up to the hype we’ve given it?
10:36 pm on 4/5/08Ok one more question about the lens cover… He He He… Is the lens cover popping out like K790 or is it almost flat like K550/K770???

10:38 pm on 4/5/08Kevin,
Depends on the hype!
Harry,
It’s flat
10:46 pm on 4/5/08Nice!!!!
10:49 pm on 4/5/08Harry,
Samsung G810 has a xenon flash behind the lens cover: (see: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_g810-review-231.php ); I’m quite sure, Paris will also have a flash…
11:10 pm on 4/5/08Only thing is that the lens cover on Paris is about half the width and height of the one on G810
Anyway, let’s close the Q&A session for this time. I really need to get back to some more serious work.
Cheers and thanks for the many questions
11:50 pm on 4/5/08Michell,
what about the stylus location? Left or Right?
12:00 am on 4/6/08If I may just add a comment, not a question: The C902 has its flash under its sliding lens cover. So it is entirely possible we will see this on ‘Paris’. Especially considering the C902 is a recently announced phone so should follow SE’s current design styles.
I do have a question but am unsure as to whether I can ask it, as I missed out on this Q&A due to sleep and work. I’d like to ask, so let me know if I can. Thanks.
And a huge thanks for the leaks and questions you have already answered, and for putting up with the sh*t some people give you!
10:02 am on 4/6/08Michell, I have a P1i as you know, is this ‘Paris’ a worthy upgrade, or should I stick to the P1i?
11:15 am on 4/6/08Please guys, it’s closed.
I’ve only kept the commenting open for your sake - if I close it, it’ll remove the already posted comments.
Any further questions will be deleted.
11:20 am on 4/6/08it looks likte it is 2.2 screen
6:42 pm on 4/7/08hi i is this reel or fake? i wish reel
8:28 am on 4/8/08Will it have profiles? I cannot use my P1i at work because of lack of profiles. Its a complete disaster! I still take my E61 to work!
To all those who want a Xenonflash- Have you ever tried using the flash to look for your car keys at night? LEDs are SOOO much better!
