X1 – Now Without The Windows Key

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Something seems to have happened as Sony Ericsson today removed the Windows short cut key on the front of the X1 photos. If you compare photos of the phone before and the phone photos today, you’ll notice that the key is now blank. Check the detail here:

It seems like all photos with the exception of the press photos have been edited. I’ll try to get a comment on this. Check out the XPERIA mini-site to see for yourself!

A new version of the Emma flashing tool for Sony Ericsson workers, application developers, repair and service teams and alike is out. This one includes lots of new features and a complete make-over in terms of the graphical user interface.

So, if this is only for special people, why am I telling you about it? Because, it is likely that SEUS will also soon come with a new GUI and the same new features (performance and usability improvements). Emma can be found here and must be downloaded (not just updated with the old client).

More pictures of Emma running and logged in, after the break. (more…)

T303 Is The New Kid On The Block

t303_1.jpg

Sony Ericsson has just officially announced the Sony Ericsson T303 – the first slider in the T-series, which might come as a surprise to many. T303 is a low-end slider targeted at style-concious consumers.

- The T303 is a great addition to the Sony Ericsson T-line of products, combining premium finish and materials with a good feature-set to deliver ‘style with substance’, says Lykke Tærsbøl, Senior Designer at the Sony Ericsson Creative Design Centre in the press release.

T303’s housing is made of metal and has a chrome finish and the 1.8 inch TFT display with a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels is mirrored. T303 is a very small phone at only 83 x 47 x 14.7 mm and a weight of 93 grams.

T303 features a 1.3 mega pixel camera, an FM radio, the unique TrackID feature and Bluetooth. It is delivered with the Protective Case IDC-22, which is a part of Sony Ericsson’s fashion line of accessories.

It will be available in stores in mid 2008, and will come in two colours; Shimmering Silver and Shadow Black.

X1 IS An H2 Product – We’ve Got The Official Statement!

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Lately there have been some rumours about the release date of X1. It was said that it supposedly won’t see the light of the day till some time in February 2009. I’ve told many people otherwise and I have now fetched an official statement regarding the X1 and its release.

- I can confirm that we will be launching the X1 product in 2nd Half of 2008, as per our announcement of 10th February that we made in Barcelona, said Aldo Liguori, who is the Corporate Vice President of the Global Communications and PR department at Sony Ericsson.

So, there you have it. The only reason for the mysterious “10th of February release” is the fact that Sony Ericsson (or should I say Microsoft) has yet to decide on when to publicly announce the operating system and technical specifications of the X1, and thereby also a precise release date.

New Slider is T303?

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

You may remember the pictures of the unidentified slider that were posted a few days ago, well it seems that the handset has picked up a name; the T303. As well as the name semcblog are also reporting that the handset will feature the following specifications:

  • Low-end phone
  • GSM/GPRSDisplay 128×160 pixels
  • Camera 1.3 Mp
  • Fast-port on left side
  • Three soft-keys, Red end/green call keys (could be A2 platform?)
  • Available in two colours: Black and Silver

W890 Preview

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I had a bit of a play with the W890 today and I have to say, it’s a jolly decent wee handset. I snapped some quick pictures of the handset for this preview, they are up to my usual high standard (that is they’re mince), but better quality pictures should be available for the full review.

Let’s get my gripes out of the way first shall we? The speaker volume isn’t too good in my opinion, being a little on the quiet side. At maximum volume the speakers do perform reasonably well, but I would have expected better performance overall in this department from a dedicated music handset. The speakers themselves are a little disappointing in that they are simply small holes on the front and back near at the top of the handset. The speakers aren’t stellar although they are better than one might expect in terms of their quality. It would have been nice if there were side positioned stereo speakers, but one can’t have everything in such a small package I suppose.

The size of the handset is obviously a major selling point in that it is very thin (only slightly thicker than its predecessor, the W880). I like the tiny stature of the W880, but not it’s small buttons, which is why I am keener on the W890 as it has larger buttons that are easier to operate. Not that one doesn’t occasionally press the wrong button on the navi pad, but for the most part it’s ok to use.

For it being such a small handset it does pack in some nice features, not the least of which is HSDPA data access, which makes web browsing nice and speedy. The usual features are present; the Walkman player, Track ID, etc. It’s not the most advanced handset in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. It sells itself with a well rounded package of features in an attractive form factor that will appeal to those looking for something stylish.

Nokia: “PlayStation Phone Doesn’t Scare Us”

Saturday, March 1st, 2008

I came across an interesting little article that was linked on Engadget. The article in questions reported that Jaakko Kaidesoja, Nokia’s head of gaming, has been making some bold statements in relation to the much rumoured PlayStation phone. Mr Kaidesoja is quoted as having said “I’m not scared about anybody.”

This was followed up by Mr Kaidesoja questioning Sony Ericsson’s ability to produce a gaming handset: “The real question is how do they [Sony Ericsson] do it? Can they create a link between the PSP games and a phone? Can they do the multiplayer and online stuff? We’ve been doing this for two years and it hasn’t been easy.”

They are certainly interesting comments for Nokia’s head of gaming to make in public. One obvious interpretation would be that Nokia see Sony Ericsson as the manufacturer best placed to release a gaming handset, no doubt parent Sony’s expertise in the field and the PlayStation brand having much to do withsuch a perception.

The other point that one may infer from the comments is that Nokia take the idea of a possible PlayStation handset seriously enough to publicly comment on it. Of course that isn’t proof that such a handset will come to fruition, but it will no doubt add fuel to the rumour conflagration that is blazing brightly around the idea of a PlayStation handset.
