Z770 – Official at Last

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

z770_large_pic.jpg

It’s a handset we have become familiar with over the past week or two as spy pics appeared, but today sees the official announcement of the Z770.

It’s a mid-range clamshell, a form factor that Sony Ericsson seems to be giving some love to recently. Features wise the Z770 comes with a 2 MP camera, with 2.5x digital zoom; HSDPA support, and Google Maps for Mobile pre-installed. It’s not going to weigh you down either, being 93 x 48 x 15.5 mm and only 93 grams.

The press release can be found here.

C702 & C902 Announced at 3GSM

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Sony Ericsson today announced a new series of handsets, the C series. The C series will cover Cybershot branded handsets and two such handsets were announced today; the C702 and C902.

The C702 sports a 3.2 MP camera with a LED flash and is dust and water resistant whilst the C902 features a 5 MP camera with a Xenon flash, and both handsets feature Face Detection. Both handsets are HSDPA enabled and support quad-band GSM, which is no doubt welcome news for our North American readers.

The C702 comes in at 106×48x15.5 mm and the C902 isn’t much bigger at 108×49x10.5 mm. In terms of weight the two are almost identical, the C702 being 105g and the C902 being 107g. The C702 does have a slightly larger screen than the C902 though, 2.2 inches to 2 inches respectively. However, the C902 wins out in talktime, with 9 hours being listed for GSM usage versus the C702’s 7 hours.

Sony Ericsson expects both handsets to be available for purchase in Q2 i.e. sometime after March 31st.

XPERIA X1 – The Ultimate Flagship

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

x1_pic.jpg

XPERIA X1 is a somewhat a wonder! First thing you notice is the great touch screen on the front. It’s a 3 inch large display, and the resolution is an incredible 800 x 480 pixels! This gives an extremely sharp picture. The display can show up to 65.536 colours, due to Windows Mobile restrictions.

x1_1_s.jpg

As just said, the platform in X1 is Windows Mobile. This means the program and games offering is a lot larger than with UIQ. This seems quite reasonable, especially because the UIQ market isn’t that large. Even though it’s Windows Mobile, Sony Ericsson has put its own touch to the user interface – one being the new XPERIA system with no less than 9 beautiful home screens.

- XPERIA™ represents the first brand that is truly borne from within Sony Ericsson. It represents our vision for a premium, energised communication experience, says Dee Dutta, Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson.

x1_2_s.jpg

X1 is a multimedia device with focus on fast communication, web use and GPS navigation. Therefore, the device is equipped with a full sliding QWERTY keyboard, WLAN b/g, HSDPA, HSUPA and of course a GPS.

- Our vision for the XPERIA™ X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment within a distinctive design, says Rikko Sakaguchi, Head of Portfolio and Propositions at Sony Ericsson.

With X1 you can navigate how you want. You can either use the large touch screen, the QWERTY keyboard, the 4-way navigation key or the optical joystick. The phone is 11 centimetres long, so there should be enough room for a nice QWERTY keyboard.

- XPERIA™ is our promise to think foremost of user experience and to deliver the premium experience – anytime, anywhere, anything, with anyone, Sakaguchi continues.

x1_3_s.jpg

X1 is released in the 2nd half of 2008, we’re guessing some time around October. The price is unknown, but it’s going to be high.

W980 Is Finally Official

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

1.jpg

After days of rumours and pictures the W980 is finally officially announced. In terms of features the handset is positioned in the high-end of Sony Ericsson’s portfolio and boasts 8 Gb of internal memory, HSDPA connectivity and a 3.2 MP camera. A full list of its specifications is presented below.

2.jpg

The handset is quite exciting as it represents the first time Sony Ericsson has released a high-end clamshell handset since the Z1010. It is also notable because it offers much of the same music functionality as the recently released W960 smartphone, but without the smartphone part, which may appeal to those who want the W960’s music capabilities in a non-smartphone package.

Sony Ericsson are currently listing the W980 as being available from Q3 in selected markets. This puts the release time frame somewhere between July and September.

Sony Ericsson At Mobile World Congress

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Later tonight (at 7.00 PM CET), Sony Ericsson will be holding a press conference in Barcelona, and here they’ll announce a large number of phones.

We’ll be covering the event from behind our computers, but have got several people down in Barcelona as well for the event. This way, we’ll be able to bring you exclusive live photos of the new announcements just as they’re announced. We’ll be making a large gallery for this purpose only. If you can’t wait for the live photos, then don’t worry – we’re certain to see leaks hours before the announcements.

Furthermore, UIQ Technology will be holding a press conference Wednesday along with Sony Ericsson and Motorola. This will be regarding the UIQ platform and strategies. While I was invited to the event, I will not be able to participate. However, we’ve already made a deal with UIQ about an exclusive interview after the event.

Stay tuned – it’s going to be a hot evening, and an even hotter week!
