G700 & G900 are Sony Ericsson’s newest UIQ 3 based smart phones. They were announced just recently at MWC, and will be in shops in a matter of months (Summer time!). In the mean time, GSMArena have had their hands on these new compact smart phones, and have done some pretty thorough previews of each phone. A Sony Ericsson patent reveals how the company intends to use projectors inside cellphones. According to the patent, when the projector beams the desired image on to a surface, the on-board camera will take an image of the projected image to analyse if any adjustments are to be made. If required, the projector application will change the intensity of the projector to project the ideal image. Now, if the patent could have revealed when we’ll see a phone with an inbuilt projector…

Sony Ericsson today patented a cellphone cover that renders the phone resistant to dust, water and shock arising when the phone is dropped. The cover will be made of two different materials – soft and rigid – to make the cover sturdy and at the same time enabling the user to use the cellphone without taking it out. Nothing earth shattering, we’d say, but newsworthy nevertheless.

Sony Ericsson’s three top models have just received an update to fix some of the problems and bugs in the firmwares. While I have not noticed many bugs in W960, the K850 and W910 does indeed pack quite a few, especially because they were among the first A200 offerings. I have just updated my K850, and Sony Ericsson has definitely been working on this firmware release, that’s for sure! It’s much faster in general, no more lagging in Media, new effects and much faster working in Media, 3D games in particular run much more smoothly now. The camera has been much improved as well, and same goes for video recordings. Another fine new feature is that you can set the phone to vibrate when using the touch sensitive buttons - this works quite well.
Now for some technical stuff. The K850 firmware is called R1EA031, and is not a major release. The W910 firmware is called R1EA030, and has pretty much the same improvements as with the K850. The W960 firmware CDA is called R6G02, and I have yet to decide whether I’ll update my W960 or not. I am liking it as it is now, so there’ll have to be either new features or improvements for me to update

JUSTAMP are showing some rather smashing looking SO905iCS unboxing pictures. The SO905i is the first Cybershot branded handset to be released in Japan, and true to form has some impressive features such as a 5 MP AF camera with 3x optical zoom, and a rather impressive WVGA screen (hint for SE: your European customers wouldn’t mind seeing these sort of specs in their Cybershot handsets!).
