WiFi Enabler & More Coming Soon

Friday, February 15th, 2008

wifi_enabler.jpgwlan_in_a200.jpgThe A200 platform supports WLAN connection, however there are no devices with built-in WLAN. Sony Ericsson is now trying to make up for this by soon announcing a WiFi Enabler accessory, that is most likely to look at work like the FM transmitters, MMR-60 and MMR-70, and make use of the Fast Port connector.

Furthermore, Sony Ericsson is working on a follow-up GPS Enabler, called GPS Enabler 2 (Helmer Fingal II) and also a sport GPS accessory. G900 is reportedly going to come with the GPS Enabler as a part of the consumer package.

How can we be sure of it all? Well, it was leaked in the G700/G900 white papers, which you can at Sony Ericsson’s Developer World.

PS. The WiFi accessory image is of course just a mock-up – the K850 screenshot isn’t, though! :-)

IM In Your Phone Book

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

An upcoming service is to be launched in upcoming Sony Ericsson phones, starting with the W760. This new feature has been developed by Ericsson, and is somewhat of an enhancement of the phone book application on Sony Ericsson’s feature phones. It makes it possible to send instant messages to your contacts from within the phone book. Users will be able to store messages, small notes about self and also avatars in these chat discussions. To me this sounds like an enhanced sort of SMS texting, so let’s wait and see how it’ll work. Ericsson claims that this will bring a more interactive phone book, and could replace the ancient way of getting in contact with people.

As said, this service is to be launched in the upcoming W760, set to be released in June.

[Thanks, Andreas!]

W910 Wins “Best Handset” 2008 Award

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Some might remember that the W910 music phone was a nominee in “Best handset” category at the 2008 Global Mobile Awards.

Guess what – it won! This is great news for Sony Ericsson.

- We are very proud to receive such a prestigious award for what has proved to be a very popular product, says Hideki ‘Dick’ Komiyama, President of Sony Ericsson.

- The W910 Walkman makes it quicker and easier to transfer or download music. It’s also about thinking beyond music, to games, videos and the Web, he continued.

Judges’ comments were: The Sony Ericsson W910 is a superb all-rounder. A compelling, easy to use design that has captured the imagination of consumers around the world in 2007.”

Congratulations, Sony Ericsson! :-)

A Look At XPERIA

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Here are screenshots of some of the different home screens available in XPERIA. The XPERIA panels are fully customizable, and will all change accordingly to what happens.
The first picture displays the business home screen with a large clock, links to messages, calls and live calender posts.
The second one is the calendar overview, which pretty much does the same as the first one, but with a better overview of the camera and upcoming schedules.
The third one is the media one with links to music, videos, photos, games and alike. This is somewhat reminding of the current Media menu in A200 phones, and the W960 as well as the newly announced G700 & G900 offerings. Videos can be watched in a simple way with large controls.
Fourth screen shot is the photo album. Here you can very easily navigate using your finger on the touch screen, the 4-way key or the optical navigation by wiping your finger across the edge of the display.
Fifth and final screen shot is the upcoming PlayNow look. Easy navigation with your finger, and also finger scrolling.
