Sony Ericsson is going to change its old nomenclature of their entire product range. Some among you were surprised of the funky and weird namings of the latest Sony Ericsson products. This scheme will answer almost all of your questions regarding the new namings.
The future names won’t carry the typical “i” in the end of the product name. So the R300 and the R306 are the first phones that follow this new nomenclature. It isn’t really new, since we know the same nomenclature from the Japanese phones already. And here we go:
To get the whole story completed - a brief explanation of the upcoming series and their lower end parts:
• XPERIA vs. G-Series (G stands for: Generation Web)
The G-series is the lower end series compared to the XPERIA series. Both are determined as dedicated smart phone series.
• Cyber-shot - Series vs. Snapshot - Series (new S-series phones)
Cyber-shot has become a well known and well beloved series within the Sony Ericsson portfolio. It will get a new “sub-brand” called Snapshot containing new stylish phones in different form factors poorer equipped than the Cyber-shot models.
• Walkman - Series vs. Radio - Series (new R-series phones)
The smaller brother of the Walkman line will be the poorer equipped Radio line. It will be a nice extension regarding the music department of Sony Ericsson.
Successors will be indexed for example C912… C922… C932, and so on
As you can see, there are a lot of varieties and combinations… so SE won’t run out of new names that soon
SE4m has leaked photos of a new Sony Ericsson slider phone. It’s supposedly going to be a low-end phone with a 1.3 MP camera without auto focus. The display seems to be of QVGA resolution (if not, then 176 x 220 pixels), and boasting a diagonal of about 1.9 inches. Design wise the phone is covered in brushed metal with a tint of glass like material/glossy see-through plastic. It’s a tiny phone, measuring about 8 centimetres in height and about 4 centimetres in width. It is however a bit thick - about 15 millimetres.
I could see this as being a generic version of an upcoming Walkman branded music phone. What makes me think so? The speaker around the navigation d-pad… Furthermore, Sony Ericsson might boost the camera resolution to two mega pixels, and call it a style-minded mid-end phone. Some might think I’m crazy calling this a potential mid-end phone, but the large bump on the back might indicate a special feature, and the soft key layout as well as the call and end buttons could indicate the presence of the A200 platform. One thing to notice is the lack of buttons on the sides of the phone.
The C902 features face recognition technology, which tracks a face in a photograph in order to focus on it. Here we can see the technology in action; watch as the subject moves his head and the handset tracks the location of his face.
G700 & G900 are Sony Ericsson’s newest UIQ 3 based smart phones. They were announced just recently at MWC, and will be in shops in a matter of months (Summer time!). In the mean time, GSMArena have had their hands on these new compact smart phones, and have done some pretty thorough previews of each phone. You’ll find the G700 preview here, and the G900 preview here.
Furthermore, we’ve just uploaded a small gallery of G900 photos. You can check out the photos below. More photos will come of both G700, G900 and BeiBei - we promise!
A Sony Ericsson patent reveals how the company intends to use projectors inside cellphones. According to the patent, when the projector beams the desired image on to a surface, the on-board camera will take an image of the projected image to analyse if any adjustments are to be made. If required, the projector application will change the intensity of the projector to project the ideal image. Now, if the patent could have revealed when we’ll see a phone with an inbuilt projector…
Sony Ericsson today patented a cellphone cover that renders the phone resistant to dust, water and shock arising when the phone is dropped. The cover will be made of two different materials – soft and rigid – to make the cover sturdy and at the same time enabling the user to use the cellphone without taking it out. Nothing earth shattering, we’d say, but newsworthy nevertheless. (Note from Michell; C702, anyone??)
Sony Ericsson’s three top models have just received an update to fix some of the problems and bugs in the firmwares. While I have not noticed many bugs in W960, the K850 and W910 does indeed pack quite a few, especially because they were among the first A200 offerings. I have just updated my K850, and Sony Ericsson has definitely been working on this firmware release, that’s for sure! It’s much faster in general, no more lagging in Media, new effects and much faster working in Media, 3D games in particular run much more smoothly now. The camera has been much improved as well, and same goes for video recordings. Another fine new feature is that you can set the phone to vibrate when using the touch sensitive buttons - this works quite well.
Now for some technical stuff. The K850 firmware is called R1EA031, and is not a major release. The W910 firmware is called R1EA030, and has pretty much the same improvements as with the K850. The W960 firmware CDA is called R6G02, and I have yet to decide whether I’ll update my W960 or not. I am liking it as it is now, so there’ll have to be either new features or improvements for me to update
