Exclusive: Large update on Paris

Posted by Michell | January 26th, 2008

‘Paris’ is the codename of the speculated high-end phone P5.
Sliding keyboard and different home screens you can navigate between by pressing left and right. Also, we’ve got a sliding mechanism on the back of the phone as a lens protector for the camera. “5 MP” is also stated on the back near the camera. It comes with a stylus even though the user interface can easily be used with your finger as well. It’s black and a bit smaller than P1. It has a built-in GPS (NaviLink 5.0 NL5350) with WayFinder 7.0 built-in as well as a weather application and the new Opera Mobile 9 with intelligent zoom and widgets. Based on OMAP34xx hardware platform.

Paris is going to be announced along with Beibei, if everything goes as planned, which it should.

So no Snapdragon processor on paris(P5), no more chance to see ATi GPU :( but at least it utilizes the powerful TI-OMAP 34xx series which means the P5 would support HD videos and XGA display! :D
But i’m so excited at BeiBei, i do hope it’s got an autofocus so that i could divert my full attention to that instead of the P5 :P

I am pretty sure it’s running OMAP 34xx - I have still to check it out completely, but will let you know when I get around it ;-)
And Beibei should have auto focus.

I think omap 34xx has native h264 hardware accelarator inside,
    so videos shd be smooth…

The most interesting is the final RAM amount and graphic accelerators.
How do you get that nice info by the way, Michell?
It seems my P990 will have a really good successor.
Oh, and I still have a hope for a full qwerty!

Yes this should be my next phone too. I held out on upgrading my W800 last year when I started hearing about the ‘P5′. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Any idea if this will have auto focus and xenon flash?

    @Michell Bak
over at Esato there is some confusion over the names of the P5…is it Bella or is it Paris…if it is Paris then what is Bella….if it is Bella what is then Paris!?!?…confusing isn’t it:)

    9:09 pm on 1/26/08
  12. Michell Bak says:

Bella was the codename of the first prototype based on the old hardware. The new phone, codenamed Paris, is making use of new hardware and therefore pretty much everything has been changed, hence a new codename.

Was Bella the P5 which PK over at Esato had?

    10:18 pm on 1/26/08
  15. Farhaad says:

    @n3o
I’m not Michell but from what I understand the old proto that PK had WAS Bella. After they made the changes they also changed the codename which is now Paris. So, currently PK has Paris. Bella was the old proto.

    Hey Guys,

I just found this website. Its cool was wondering where I could talk about my SE.

I’m a old SE-P800 - P990 user. I used to go Nokia but the SE-800 changed that, Recently I’ve been frustrated by the SE development path.

Personally you have had the Software and the hardware to beat the smartphone market into submission, what ARE you guys doing over there? Designing the things by committee?

We all know the UIQ implementation for the P990 was a screw up. So I hope you have really thought about this. The reviews so far seem good and the P1 was much better but hey i’m sure you would have prefered not to go through the learning process.

From branding point of view you got slammed by the I-phone. It isn’t a good phone. It has one interesting function. P-910 could whip it if you had tried.

That said this is where I think you can make vast improvements:

    a) Bring back my 5-way jog dial. Make it out of better material, it needs to be solid in its feel and a lot more mechanical, so once i click something it stays slicks and doesn’t roll on to the next menu item. Related - get rid of the four way joystick thing. Its useless. The jog-dial is much better, especially on the move. On the P990 you lot managed to replaced the functionality of one jog-dial with around six buttons. Its frustrating and pointless. When i’m walking through airports, and generally trying to use the thing I use ONE hand not two. The other hand is holding a passport and the like. I do not want to have to stop , put the passport down and then fiddle with both hands.

    2) QWERTY keyb - thanks for bringing back a proper qwerty keyb. the slider i what you should have done for the p990 and the p1. Fire the muppet that suggested taking way screen space to put in a keyb on the p990. If you’d left it on the flip it would have humiliated the I-phone/HTc/RIM/PALM or whatever else the marketing department said you needed.

3)Make sure it works - Can you make sure the software undergoes proper usability testing The key guiding principle should be lighting quick operation and ease of use. STOP COPYING WINDOZE phones, you have a brilliant OS. So say no fancy sliding menus, funky sounds, useless themes, pretty colours - if it starts adding pointless code and more points of failure. It is the most frustrating thing when you wait for 1.5 years for a cutting edge SE product and the thing crashes in four hours, then refuses to work properly. Then you spend hours on the phone with your phone company convincing them that its not you its the phone.

I’m going to wait for this phone. Because I love UIQ and SE smartphones. But if the P5 doesn’t make the other smart phones on this planet look like useless desk ornaments i’m going to be sorely disappointed.

P.S If the marketing/trend analysis bods think they are so clever let them explain why the P-series went from being the big boss of Smartphones to a small time player. I bet they won’t take any responsibility.

P.P.S Always available to expand my views, drop me an email.

P.P.P.S can your Connectivity suite and back up option have software options for transferring SMSs from old phone to new as well as contacts. Actually what would be REALLY cool would be ability to clone a any old SE phones, SMSs and contacts in full onto a new one. That would keep old customers loyal too.
